Lok Sabha MPs take exception to Supreme Court serving notice to Govt on salary of MPs

New Delhi, Mar 24 (UNI) The members in Lok Sabha today took strong exception to the Supreme Court taking cognizance of a petition and serving notice to the Central Government on the salary and allowances including MPs with the Government asserting that the rights and privileges of the members of both Houses were "sacrosanct". Raising the issue during Zero Hour, senior member of Trinamool Congress, Saugata Roy, said the apex court's serving such a notice was "transgression" on the rights and privileges of Parliament. "We are not asking why former judges are getting pension, why should Supreme Court ask about MPs pension," he asked and urged the Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to protect the interest of the House as the "custodian" of the House. Responding to him, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the issue of salary and allowances of the Members of Parliament are guaranteed by the provision of Article 106 of the Constitution. "Rights and privileges of the members are sacrosanct. It is the right of the House," he said. MORE UNI DEVN SNU 1251
