Kolkata, Jan 19 (UNI) The legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who will be conferred the highest order of merit from France 'Legion of Honour' on January 30, turns 83 today.

Born on January 19, 1935, Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Soumitra recently mesmerised his audiences with his stellar performance in 'Mayurakshi'.

The stalwarts from various fields taking their social media account on to express their respect and gratitude towards the legendary thespian.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "Wishing Soumitra da a very happy birthday. May you give us many more memorable characters on screen".

Not only Ms Banerjee but National Film Archive of India (NFAI) also extended their heartfelt wishes.

Bengali film superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, who shared screen with him in his last outing poured his love and respect for his Soumitra kaku.

“For me more than a co-actor he is like my family and on his special day, I would like to wish Soumitra Kaku many many happy returns of the day,” he added.

Actor cum MP Dev also offered his respect for the living legend.

Actress Indrani Halder, who have been teamed up with the institute himself for numerable occasions said, "Soumitra Chatterjee is a father figure to me. I am very much fortunate that I got the chance to work with him in many occasions and working with him is a best workshop an actor could expect.’

“ I wish him a very happy birthday and want to work lot more with him in coming time. Today he turned 83 but those who worked with him only knows that he has an energy level of a teenager till now. He is a real perfectionist," she added.
