Life Sciences crucial to achieving USD 3 trillion economy: Minister Sridhar Babu

Hyderabad, Feb 18 (UNI) Telangana IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu on Wednesday said the life sciences sector will play a pivotal role in achieving Telangana’s goal of becoming a USD 3 trillion economy by 2047, underlining the government’s resolve to position the State as a global life sciences powerhouse.
Addressing the fireside chat and closing ceremony titled “Telangana Rising 2047: Building a World Class Life Sciences Ecosystem” at BioAsia 2026 held at HITEX, the Minister said that within just two years, from December 2023 to January 2026, Telangana attracted investments worth Rs 73,360 crore in the life sciences sector and generated nearly one lakh jobs.
Sridhar Babu said the Telangana Rising 2047 vision was launched with the participation of experts and the public, aiming to raise the State’s share in the national GDP to 10 per cent. He said comprehensive plans are being implemented to further strengthen the life sciences ecosystem so that it becomes a key growth driver in reaching the long-term economic targets.
Highlighting key initiatives, the Minister said the State has rolled out the Telangana Next-Gen Life Sciences Policy (2026–2030), established the Telangana Life Sciences School, launched the 1Bio Incubator, expanded Genome Valley, developed Pharma Villages, strengthened world-class infrastructure, forged international partnerships and focused on skill development to build a robust ecosystem.
He noted that over 2,000 life sciences companies are currently operating in Telangana, contributing one-third of India’s pharmaceutical production and nearly one-fifth of the country’s pharma exports. He added that major global companies such as Sanofi, Opella, Vaccine Animal Health, Trendence and RX Propellant expressed interest in investing in Telangana during this year’s BioAsia conference.
The Minister said special roundtable discussions with experts from the UK, New Zealand, South Korea, Australia, Japan and other countries addressed future challenges in the life sciences sector and strategies to enhance Telangana’s global footprint. He also said discussions held in collaboration with the World Economic Forum focused on India’s potential to emerge as the world’s third-largest bioeconomy and the role Telangana can play, leading to the preparation of a comprehensive roadmap.
Sridhar Babu said BioAsia 2026 witnessed participation from 4,394 delegates from Fortune 500 companies and across the globe, and served as a platform for over 4,000 high-level B2B meetings that paved the way for new investments and partnerships.
Stating that the government views the life sciences sector not merely as a business but as a social responsibility, the Minister urged industrialists to invest in Telangana, describing the State as highly conducive for industrial development, and called upon them to actively participate in the Rising Telangana journey.
