West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered the evergreen actor on the occasion.

“Solemnly remembering the evergreen actor Dev Anand on his death anniversary,” Ms Banerjee posted on her social networking page.

He entertained his audiences for more than six decades and redefined the world of cinema through his exclusive style.

Born on September 26, 1923, Dev Anand, who worked in more than 100 films and has entertained us with films like Guide, Hare Krishna Hare Ram, Des Pardes, Jewel Thief and Johnny Mera Naam to name a few, holds a special place in everyone's heart.

He gave a new dimension to that magical state known as Stardom. And for his exemplary work he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001 by the President.

Cinema was his ultimate love, and his zeal for life and charm was inimitable. Dev saab as he was popularly referred to unlike his contemporaries continued to romance heroines and worked until his last days. In fact, he was working on his film Chargesheet which was supposed to be an extension of his hit film Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

Kolkata was Dev saab's favourite city to premiere his films. Taxi Driver, Nau Do Gyarah, Hum Dono, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Heera Panna — most of his films started their journeys from this city.

He had fond memories of his first visit to Kolkata in 1951 for the premiere of Baazi. The actor, then young and shy, was overwhelmed to be introduced to Uday Shankar by his friend, director Guru Dutt.

The evergreen hero was in Kolkata, along with brother, director Vijay Anand and leading lady Waheeda Rehman, for the premiere of 'Guide'. He also made it a point to visit Paradise and Lotus cinemas where 'Guide' was being screened to packed houses.

In the '60s, whenever he visited Kolkata, he made it a point to meet actress Suchitra Sen with whom he had worked in Bambai Ka Babu and Sarhad. While shooting Teen Deviyan here in 1965, the actor is said to have taken help from ace director cinematographer Ajay Kar.

"This is the capital of culture. It is the land of icons like Pramathesh Barua, Chabi Biswas, Uttam Kumar and Satyajit Ray and its audience has appreciated my films the most," Dev sahab always said.

Dev bagged his first lead role in the 1946-film Hum Ek Hain opposite Kamala Kotnis. Then his 1947-film Ziddi came as a huge break for him in the Hindi film industry.

In 1951, Anand’s bosom buddy Guru Dutt came up with his directorial debut, Baazi, which was highly successful and the actor shot to fame with this film. In the 1956-film Paying Guest he was paired with Nutan for the first time and later their onscreen chemistry became very popular among his fans

His 1965-film Guide, based on R.K.Narayan's Sahitya Akademi winning novel 'The Guide', helped him win the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the second time. His other popular films include CID, Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Kala Bazar, Kalapani, Nau Do Gyarah, Jewel Thief, Hum Dono, Taxi Driver, Tere Mere Sapne, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, to name a few.

He received Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991, Padma Bhusan in 2001 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002. He made his directorial debut with the 1970-film Prem Pujari.
