LDF candidate Antony Raju begins election campaign

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 30 (UNI) LDF candidate Antony Raju, representing Democratic Kerala Congress (Francis George) faction, began the election campaign in the Thiruvananthapuram Central seat for the May 16 Assembly election.
He had his early education in St Thomas School, Poonthura, here and completed his schooling in Rajagiri School, Kalamassery, Ernakulam. His college life marked his entry into politics though he displayed leadership qualities in various events in school level. He did Pre‐degree from St.Xavier’s College, Trivandrum, and did his graduation in Economics from Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum.
He then got enrolled in the Law Academy Law College and passed out in 1982 with flying colours and started practicing in various courts in and around Trivandrum. His wife Ms Gracy, a bank employee and their two children Roshni and Rohan always support him both in the professional and political frontline.
While in college, he entered politics through KSC, the student wing of Kerala Congress in 1972. He held various positions throughout his college life. Antony Raju was the Unit President of KSC in St.Xavier’s College. He also held the same position during his graduation period in Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum.
In 1978 he became the President of KSC Thiruvananthapuram District and State Vice President in 1979. In 1980 he became the President of Kerala Congress Thriuvananthapuram West Constituency and in 1982 he rose to the position of District General Secretary, Kerala Congress Party. He was also the Thiruvanathapuram District President of Kerala Congress from 1989 to 1997.
From the year 1998 he held the position of Party General Secretary. In 1990, he contested and won the District Council Elections as LDF candidate from Shanghumugham Division. He defeated Congress leader Adv. George Mascreen. He contested as an LDF candidate in 1991, 1996, 2001 from Thiruvananthapuram Constituent Assembly.
In 1996, it was LDF’s first political victory in Assembly Election when Adv. Antony Raju contested and won from Thiruvananthapuram West Constituency. He had defeated Congress Leader M. M. Hassan in the election and it was indeed a remarkable victory for the LDF.
He has also held the position of Chairman of public sector organizations like Travancore Cements and Handicrafts Development Corporation. He was also a member of Kerala University Syndicate.
