Lawsohtun Dorbar condemns assault in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jul 5 (UNI) The Dorbar Shnong (traditional administrative body) of Lawsohtun here in Meghalaya on Sunday condemned the assault on six non-tribal boys at the basketball court in Block-6 in the locality last Friday by “masked miscreants”, terming it as “barbaric”.

Till Saturday, Meghalaya Police picked up 11 persons on charges of being involved in the assault case.

“The Dorbar Shnong would like to inform that volunteers were engaged to ensure safety and security in the village and also to prevent any similar occurrence of law and order problems,” Lurshai Shylla, Rangbah Shnong (Village Chief) Dorbar Shnong Lawsohtun said in a statement said Sunday.

He said the Dorbar Shnong had earlier made a public announcement with regard to suspension of any form of physical activity relating to sports in its playground as per prohibitory order from the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“But on request, it was recently opened for the general public strictly in adherence to safe social distancing norms,” Shylla said.

The Dorbar Shnong maintained that it was “fully aware of the seriousness of the issues” and was working co-coordinately with various NGO’s to prevent such unpleasant event that has hurt the sentiments of all.

Terming these incidents are “unprecedented”, Shylla said, “The Dorbar Shnong would have taken strong action if it had prior information and would have prevented and handed over the accused to the law.

“The Dorbar Shnong has been working hand in hand with various government functionaries especially with the Police Department in bringing about peace and harmony in the village in dealing with criminal elements in its jurisdiction, and as per community interest is concerned, we would like to mention here that Lawsohtun is a homely place for all communities,” he further said.

“Some of these communities have been living harmoniously and owning their lands here since the British era and celebrating Christmas and New Year together with the indigenous folks and speaking the same language as well,” Shylla said.

Clarifying that the incident that took place at the basketball ground was a “clash between two groups and not to be misunderstood as racial”, the statement said that an FIR would be filed against those inciting communal feelings regarding the incident through the social media.
