New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday said law and order is the backbone of 'good governance' and in its absence, social progress is hampered.
The Speaker said this, while addressing the Officer Trainees of the Indian Police Service (IPS) at the Parliament House Complex, here.
He exhorted the young police officers to adopt the latest technologies and innovation in order to make sure that crime is controlled and lawful citizens are aided in their everyday life.
Birla also underlined the pivotal role played by police leadership belonging to the IPS in service to the nation.
Observing that public representatives and police officers share a close working relationship with regard to public welfare, the Speaker urged the officers to respond to the peoples' needs in a sensitive and efficient manner.
Speaking about the country's ancient democratic heritage, Birla mentioned that Indian democracy is people-centric and has since historic times, emphasised the humanistic values of service, sacrifice and justice.
"In the 75-year journey since Independence, peoples' faith in democracy has only deepened. Indian democracy has become stronger and resilient," a Lok Sabha Secretariat statement quoted the Speaker as saying.
As part of their training, the officers are currently undergoing a two-day appreciation course in Parliamentary Processes and Procedures, organised by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE).
The Officer Trainees belong to the 73rd Regular Recruit Batch of IPS. A total of 133 Officer Trainees attended the inaugural session.
