Landlock Sikkim and major parts of Darjeeling hills cut off following landslides, Rain plays havoc in eastern Himalaya

Siliguri, Jul 12 (UNI) Sikkim and major parts of Darjeeling Hills continued to remain cut off from rest of country for the second straight day today following landslides on arterial roads NH 10 and NH 31 triggered by heavy rains and the administration alerted residents living on the banks of Teesta following swelling river with red signals posted on several points.

Train services and vehicular traffic towards the Dooars linking this North Bengal commercial town also remained severely affected due to waterlogging on the tracks and highway, official sources said.

The search operation to locate an SUV in which two vacationers from Rajasthan identified as Gaurav Sharma and Aman Garg and driver Rakesh Rai (34), a resident of Sevok Road here, was continued for the third day today.

Sources said the car had altogether four persons when it skidded off Sevok Road and plunged into Teesta near Coronation Bridge on Wednesday afternoon.

Besides the landlock Sikkim in the eastern Himalaya, many parts of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong have been remained cut off from plains in the Siliguri for the second day today owing to road blockade on arterial NH 10 and NH 31, triggered by heavy rains for past week.

An official communique said due to landslides and restriction of movement of vehicles on NH10 from Siliguri to Kalimpong, traffic movement restricted to Kalimpong–Teesta Baazar–Peshok-Jorebungalow-Ghoom–Sonada–Kurseong–Rohini–Siliguri and Kalimpong–Algarah–Lava–Gorubathan (Pandara More)–Damdim–Oodlabari–Mongpong–Coronation Bridge (Bagpool)– Sevoke-Siliguri.

A report said red alert has been sounded following swelling of Teesta and some 3586,90 cusec water have been released from Teesta barrage today.

Dykes at Leese river caved in causing gushing of water Sargaon village in the Dooars, and a spate of Mahanada also inundated cultivable lands where an acute shortage of drinking water was also reported in several villages after the underground wells flooded with muddy water.
