Lack of infrastructure, testing facilities responsible for high mortality rate due to corona pandemic in MMR: Fadnavis

Thane, Jul 6 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Devendra Fadnavis on Monday blamed the lack of coordination between various agencies, lack of infrastructure facilities and low rate of testing facilities for the high rate of mortality due to the corona pandemic in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Addressing the media here at the last leg of his three-day tour of the civic corporation limits of Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Kalyan-Dombivili, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi, Mira-Bhayader and Thane, he gave an account of his observations and reiterated that lack of coordination among the implementing agencies was responsible for the current state of the pandemic in the MMR region.
Mr Fadnavis repeatedly emphasised on increasing the testing facilities in order to bring down the high rate of mortality.
He said that due to inadequate testing facilities, the corona infected patients become critical and eventually result in their deaths.
The former chief minister said that to save the lives of the people, it is necessary to expedite the tests of varying period and make the reports available within a day to start the treatment of the symptomatic patients.
By not carrying out proper and sufficient testing, the lives of the patients are put to risk, he pointed out.
He compared the testing facilities in Delhi and Mumbai and said that there was a vast difference in
the testing and results thereof.
Expressing serious concern over “alarming” situation in the MMR region, he underscored the need of paying attention to the health infrastructure and facilities.
"There is a rapid increase in the number of patients in the region since the last couple of weeks," he noted and called for arresting the same.
Of total positive cases in the region, 60 per cent of the patients were from Thane district, he said and pointed that similarly 73 per cent of the deaths were from the district.
This figure needs to be brought down, he observed.
While referring to around 400 unaccounted cases in Mumbai, he said the same is the case in Thane and sought proper reconciliation of the cases and deaths in the district.
This will help in formulating the proper action plan and strategy to fight the pandemic, he averred.
If the proper picture and figures are not available, then the future strategy cannot be decided and this will be hazardous to the patients, he pointed and alleged that the government wants to conceal the figures and show that they are on a better footing.
With respect to the claim by the Health Minister Rajesh Tope that 1.22 lakh patients have received benefits under the Mahatma Phule Yojana, the Opposition leader expressed doubt about the claim and said the same needs to be verified.
He also raised the issue of two patients going missing from the Global Hub hospital at Thane and patients being laid on the corridor at a hospital in Kalyan.
