Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 22 runs to move into qualifier

Kolkata, May 22 (UNI) Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) moved into the qualifier for 9th IPL edition after they beat Sunrisers Hyderebad by 22 runs at the concluding 14th round match at Eden Gardens here today. Sent to bat KKR scored 171 for loss of six wickets and then restricted SRH to 149/8 in 20 overs, thanks to spinners Sunil Narine 3-26 and Kuldeep Yadav 2-28. With this Gujarat Lions, Sunrisers Hyderabad and KKR moved to the last four. Another slot would be decided tonight after the match between Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Already in the super fours ( qualifier) for the championship in this 9th edition Sunrisers Hyderabad lost early wicket of captain David Warner (18 from 16-ball) but despite that the visitors looked threatening for the hosts to make into the remaining two slots in the last four. Another side debutante Gujarat Lions are already in the knock out stage with 18 points from 14 games. Mystery West Indian bowler Sunil Narine was once again on his hunt taking David Warner's castle on his 3rd ball, much to the amusement of local fans at the packed stadium (66,000). But for some time Shikar Dawan (51 runs from 30-ball with 4x4 and 3x6) and Naman Ojha ( 15) came in the way for KKR win as they had 56 runs partnership in the second wicket SRH looked well set on course to another victory. But Narine once more proved to be the saviour for the hosts and had broke the partnership of Dawan and Ojha taking the latter wicket when he scoped and wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa had no problem to hold on his big gloves. Earlier, an eighty-seven-run 4th wicket partnership between Yusuf Pathan (not out 52) and Manish Pandey (48 from 30-ball) produced Kolkata Knight Riders 171 for loss of six wickets. And SRH although looked pretty threatening but concede to the spin bowling as Eden wicket took deadly turning in favour of spinners. Sent to bat by the rivals after the visiting team captain David Warner won the toss KKR began well but after the departure of the hard hitting opener Robin Uthappa, the host in the match for a must win play started faltering with bad shots. The hosts were 141 runs at end of 15th over for loss of three wickets and finally they collected only 30 runs in last five overs conceding another three wickets. MORE UNI PC-BM AE AN2024
