KKNPP Unit 2 attains full capacity of 1,000 MWe

Tirunelveli,TN Jan 21 (UNI) The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) attained its maximum capacity of 1,000 Mega Watts electricity (MWe), tonight.
Talking to mediapersons, here R.S.Sundar, Site Director of KKNPP said the country’s second 1,000 MWe Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) belonging to the Light Water Category of the Indo-Russian joint venture project attained its full capacity at around 2030 hours, after successfully crossing a range of mandatory tests - marking a new era in the ambitious civil nuclear programme of the country.
All the vital components were function exceptionally well as it reached the maximum generation capacity. Senior scientists and technocrats were monitoring the entire process.
He said after attaining criticality on July 10, 2016 power generation was gradually increased at several states in the second reactor. On attaining 250 MWe, 400 MWe, 500 MWe, 750 MWe and 900 MWe, power generation in the reactor was stopped for a range of mandatory tests stipulated by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). Only after the AERB gave its nod at every level, power production was increased to the next stage and ultimately to take the reactor to its maximum capacity.
He said Tamil Nadu is expected to get a minimum of 462.50 MWe from the second unit.
