Seoul, July 19 (UNI) The heads of the embassies and missions were called for what is assumed to be an ambassadorial meeting, according to sources.
It is not yet clear whether this is an annual meeting or a special one-off arrangement, the Express reported on Thursday.
The last North Korean ambassadorial meeting was in July 2015.
It was only the 43rd ambassadorial meeting ever conducted by the secretive state.
The news comes just weeks after the North Korean leader met with Donald Trump. The leaders had agreed to work towards “complete denuclearisation” of the Korean peninsula.
Observers have suggested the meeting may be being held ahead of the 70th anniversary of the North Korean regime in September.
South Korean agencies are watchful of their Northern neighbours, but the unification ministry has said it is yet to confirm any information on the matter.
North Korea has made 'rapid' improvements to a major nuclear site despite Kim Jong-un vowing to dismantle his regime's arsenal when he met Donald Trump at the landmark Singapore summit.
Last month’s summit was the first ever meeting between leaders of the United States and North Korea.
As well as the aim of denuclearisation, the leaders agreed on peaceful relations between the two countries, recovery of soldiers’ remains, and follow up negotiations between high level officials.
After the meetings, Trump announced the US would withdraw from provocative military exercises conducted alongside South Korea.
North Korea’s international relationships have been tense in recent years amid extensive missile and other weapons testing.
However, earlier this year, the country sent athletes to the Winter Olympics held in South Korea and proposed meetings with the South Korean leader.
They met on 27 April, on the South Korean side of the Joint Security Area.
The talks between North Korea and the US were held in Singapore on June 12, having been cancelled on May 24 before being reinstated.
