Kerpelman says UN to work for development in J&K

Jammu, Sep 10 (UNI) United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan Director Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman today said that UN is keen to work for peace and development in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Aim of United Nations India Connect (UNIC) is to connect people and UN in Jammu and Kashmir will involve youth through sports and channelize their energy to connect them,’’ Ms Kerpelman said while speaking at the ‘Meet The Press’ programme organised by the Press Club of Jammu here.
She asserted that five years back when she came to UNIC, she re-named U-N-I-C to stand for UN-India Connect, which was very apt, because that is the core of what we do.
‘’UNIC creates connections at different levels, in different ways, between different stakeholders’’, she added and said, ‘’this is also connect between the local and the global.’’
‘’UNIC connects opinion-makers and brings national and local media onboard, bringing together technical experts, social activists, policy-makers and journalists, on various issues,’’ said the Director.
She further added, ‘’much like Nokia once did, if in a somewhat different way. There are strong organizations doing powerful work across the country, work that ties in directly with themes and ideas that are priorities for the UN and for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.’’She also spoke about UNIC work and how it fits into the larger UN system during her address.
Ms Kerpelman further added, ‘’we also have important hooks such as a 12-day Peace to Non-Violence campaign which starts on the International Day of Peace on September 21 and ends on October 2, International Day of Non-Violence on Gandhi Jayanti,’’ adding, ‘’under this umbrella we work with all our partners to come up with innovative ways of celebrating and disseminating peace and non-violence.’’
The Director earlier declared open Gandhi-Mandela Cricket series-2015 (UN-GGF Peace Trophy) organized for Home inmates under-16 category at University of Jammu here.
Congratulating the organizers and the participating teams, Ms Kerpelman said that UNIC and GGF are working tirelessly for peace and development of the state as well as nation by means of organizing sports events.
‘’Volunteerism is the main aspect of Gandhi Global Family which largely provides supports to underprivileged and needy,’’ she said and added that UNIC has launched Young@70 Campaign to bring maximum number of youth under single umbrella to work for peace and fight against discrimination.
