Kerala Hartal: Normal life hit, violence and clashes involving agitators and merchants

Kozhikode, Jan 3 (UNI) The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Sabarimala Karma Samithi, to mark their protest against the police-escorted entry of two women under 50 in Sabarimala on Wednesday, witnessed widespread violence and destruction of properties all across North Kerala on Thursday.
The unprecedented reaction to the religiously-sentimental issue that provoked the pro-Hindu organizations call for a hartal, but witnessed a reversal impact in getting a much-desired implemention of the positive-and-recent decision of the merchants to keep their shutters open on hartal days. However, the merchant community overpowered the agitators in some parts of Malappuram.
The CPI(M)/DYFI activists are reported to be retaliating in various parts of North Kerala later in the evening.
