Kerala confirms presence of H5N8 virus in ducks at Kuttanad

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 27 (UNI) Kerala Forest and Animal Husbandary Minister K Raju today told the State Assembly that the presence of avian flu (H5 N8) has been confirmed in ducks in five places in Kuttanad by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal.
Replying to a submission in this regard, the Minister said the H5N8 is not fatal and will not spread to human beings. Steps have been taken to cull the affected ducks in the region with the help of various government agencies, he added.
He said steps also been taken to stop the movement of ducks to other places as part of restriction and further spread of virus. The situation is being monitored by 20 task force teams led by doctors.
