Kenyan top flight football league management hints at post COVID-19 restart

Nairobi, Jun 5 (Xinhua) The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited announced plans to restart the 2019/20 season after the local federation's decision to cancel the competition due to COVID-19 was suspended by a court in May.

The top division management company said it would convene a Governing Council meeting next week, depending on the new measures that the government will announce to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest nationwide curfew and cessation of movement in certain counties and local administrative areas may end on Saturday, and many Kenyans are optimistic the lockdown will be eased to allow the return of sporting activity.

"For the avoidance of doubt, no decision has been made regarding the fate of the KPL 2019/20 season. It should be emphasized that it is only the KPL Governing Council that has the power to make such a decision," KPL said in a statement issued in Nairobi on Thursday.

According to the body, the Governing Council gathering will discuss and decide on the fate of the KPL 2019/20 season.

Recently, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amina Mohamed confirmed that the government has set up a team to prepare for the resumption of sporting activities in the country once the COVID-19 situation has been managed.

"This is a sign that football, in general, is set to resume normalcy in the near future. We shall also be guided by the government's guidelines on the resumption of sporting activities," KPL said.
