Kenya's Wanjiru wins 10,000m at Hokuren Distance Challenge series

Tokyo, Jul 16 (Xinhua) Kenyan runner Rosemary Wanjiru, the fourth-placed finisher over the distance at the World Championships, won 10,000m race at the third meeting in the Hokuren Distance Challenge series in Abashiri, Japan.
Ten days after opening her 2020 campaign with a 5,000m win in Fukagawa, the 25-year-old stormed to victory in 30:38.18 on Wednesday, which is a world-leading mark of the year with few competitions staged and just three seconds shy of her personal best set at last year's World Championships in Doha.

Japan's Mao Ichiyama, who earned selection for Japan's Olympic team after winning this year's Nagoya Marathon in 2:20:29, finished second with a PB of 31:23.30.

Jonathan Ndiku, best known for his steeplechase exploits, won the men's 10,000m 'A' race in 27:23.47. His fellow Kenyans Alexander Mutiso and Richard Kimunyan Yator finished second and third, in 27:44.37 and 27:49.35, respectively.

Elsewhere in Abashiri, world U20 champion Nozomi Tanaka took the women's 5,000m title in 15:02.62, beating Kenya's Hellen Ekarare in 15:03.09.
