Ken Betwa Link Project a boon for MP

Bhopal, July 23 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday described the Rs 35,111-crore Ken Betwa Link Project as an ambitious enterprise with the twin objectives of irrigating backward and drought-prone areas plus providing potable water.
“Developed in the sequence of the then Premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Nadi Jodo Abhiyan, this venture will enable improved irrigation of 6.53 lakh hectares. In the near future, I shall meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and my Uttar Pradesh counterpart for ensuring early completion. I had a telephonic discussion with Mr Yogi Adityanath in this regard. That state’s Water Resources Minister Mahendra Singh will visit Madhya Pradesh and meet his opposite number,” the senior politician was officially quoted as saying while addressing a related meeting.

Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat participated via videoconferencing. Chief Secretary Iqbal Singh Bains and other officers concerned were among those present.

A memorandum of understanding was inked in August 2005 and under it the Centre shall bear 90 per cent of the expenditure. In the Ken Basin, 4.47 lakh ha of Madhya Pradesh and 2.27 lakh ha of Uttar Pradesh will be benefitted. In the Betwa Basin, 2.06 lakh ha of this state shall gain. Madhya Pradesh will fully utilise the power generated. A total 1,700 million cubic metres has been allocated to Uttar Pradesh from the Ken Basin. In this, 547 MCM was supposed to be allotted for the rabi season and 1,153 MCM in kharif but the demand was subsequently enhanced by Uttar Pradesh.

The National Water Development Agency has been entrusted with the responsibility of checking the reasonableness of requirement from November to May.
