Justice Uday Umesh Lalit to be next CJI

New Delhi, August 10(UNI) President of India Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) with effect from August 27, 2022.
The incumbent CJI NV Ramana is slated to retire on August 26, 2022.
The Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana today congratulated Justice Uday Umesh Lalit on being appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India with effect from August 27, according to a Supreme Court press release.
Justice Ramana conveyed his best wishes to Justice Lalit for a glorious tenure as the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Ramana expressed confidence that with his long and rich experience in the Bar as well as on the Bench, Justice Lalit will take the institution of judiciary to greater heights through his able leadership, the release further said.
