Joint statement by Kharge, Rahul condemns murder of Dalit youth in Raebareli as crime against Constitution and humanity

New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, today condemned the murder of Dalit youth Hariom Valmiki in Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, calling it a grave crime not just against an individual, but against humanity, the Constitution and the principles of justice.
A joint statement, issued by Kharge and Gandhi, said, "Our country has a Constitution that recognises every individual with a sense of equality. There is a law that provides every citizen equal protection, rights, and freedom of expression. What happened in Raebareli is a grave crime against the Constitution of this country. It is a crime against the Dalit community and a stain on this nation and our society."
Alleging that the incident was a part of a disturbing pattern of rising violence against Dalits, minorities, and the poor across India, they said, "The number of crimes against Dalits, minorities, and the poor in this country has increased beyond limits. Violence most often targets those who are marginalised, the Bahujan, those who lack sufficient representation and participation."
