Jharkhand: ASI killed in encounter with Maoists in poll-bound Latehar

Latehar, Nov 22 (UNI) With just eight days left for the first phase of Vidhan Sabha elections in this Naxal-affected state, the Maoists once again made their presence felt by attacking a police patrolling party in Lukaiya village under Chandwa Police Station area on Friday, killing an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police.
The martyred ASI has been identified as Sukra Oraon. In the incident police jawan Sambhu Prasad was also seriously injured and was rushed to the local hospital from where the doctors referred him to RIMS Ranchi for better medical aid.

Senior police officers said that as part of daily routine highway patrol one was on its patrolling duty on the Ranchi road when suddenly some people opened fire on the vehicle at Lukaiya village.

By the time the policemen retaliated, they had lost the ASI to bullet injuries. Upon receiving information a large number of policemen have been sent to the area. Senior Police officers were also part of the search operations.

Latehar is among the 13 seats, where polls will be held in the first phase on November 30.
