Entertainment » OtherPosted at: Jun 15 2016 4:31PM Jhargram, Kalimpong, Asansol to be new districts: MamataJangalmahal, West Bengal, Jun 15 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said three new districts - Jhargram, Kalimpong and Asansol (Burdwan industrial)- would be formed first among the five new districts in the state. Ms Banerjee, who held her first administrative meeting in the district level, said Kalimpong, Jhargram and Burdwan industrial areas have adequate infrastructure to become a full-fledged district. The Banerjee government in her first five-year term in a cabinet meeting last year passed an order to create five new districts in the state --Asansol, Jhargram, Kalimpon, Basirhat and Sundarbans. Basirhat and Sundarbans districts would be carved out of North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas. Ms Banerjee said for creating new districts, the government has to inform the High court. After becoming Chief Minister, Ms Banerjee had promised about setting up new districts for better administrative control and so that public service can be delivered at the door steps of the people staying at remote areas. This five new districts will increase the number of districts of Bengal to 25. Earlier on June 25, Alipurduar became the 20th district of the state after it was curved out of Jalpaiguri. By bifurcating Midnapore (west), Jhargram was formed. However, for long Jhargram had been functioning as a police district. From South 24-Parganas, Sunderbans is to be curved out, similarly Basirhat will be formed from North 24-Parganas. After coming to power for the first time in 2011, Ms Banerjee had promised about setting up new districts for better administrative control and so that public service could be delivered better. Once the new five districts are carved out, the number of districts in West Bengal would go upto 25.
