Jat reservation: SC issues notice to Centre

New Delhi, Feb 8 (UNI)The Supreme Court today issued notice, returnable within four weeks, to the Union of India after hearing several pleas, filed by many banking professionals who were removed from their jobs, after it nullified the Jat community reservation. A division bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, issued the notice to Centre and asked it to file a detailed reply within four weeks after hearing from the lawyer for these banking professionals. These banking professionals -- mostly Probationary Officers (PO) -- were working in State Bank of India (SBI), Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) and Bank of Baroda, had approached the Apex Court seeking re-appointment in these banks. These aggrieved POs lawyer contended that these candidates appointments were made to their respective banks on March 12, five days before the Apex Court had delivered its landmark judgement quashing the Union government's notification granting reservation to the Jat community in nine states. The Supreme Court had in its judgement on March 17, 2015, set aside the then Congress-led UPA government's March 4, 2014, notification, which had granted reservation to the Jats under the Other Backward Classes category in nine states. The apex court said that the reservation for the Jat community was carried out ignoring the recommendation of the National Commission for Backward Classes to the contrary. UNI XC CJ RP1707
