Jaishankar, Lavrov discuss follow-up of summit meeting, 2+2 talks

New Delhi, Jan 4 (UNI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday exchanged New Year greetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and discussed the follow-up of the bilateral Annual Summit and the 2+2 meeting held last month.
In a tweet, the EAM said the two sides also agreed to remain in regular touch.
“Glad to exchange New Year greetings with Russian FM Sergey Lavrov this evening.
“Discussed the follow up of the Annual Summit and 2+2 Meeting. Agreed to remain in regular touch,” he posted.
A readout of the talks the Russian Embassy said, “at the initiative of the Indian side, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with External Affairs Minister of India Dr S. Jaishankar.”
The Ministers wished each other a Happy New Year and Merry Christmas.
“As a follow-up to the results of the Russian-Indian summit held in New Delhi on December 6, they discussed practical issues of bilateral cooperation, as well as confirmed the intention to consistently strengthen relations of the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two states in the spheres of economy and investments, nuclear energy, space, high technologies and healthcare.“
The two sides agreed on further steps to expand interaction in regional and international affairs, including cooperation in the SCO, BRICS, RIC, as well as in the UN and the UN Security Council.
They also exchanged views on preparations for the upcoming high-level contacts, including a meeting of the Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, as well as meetings between the leadership of the Foreign Ministries, it said.
On December 6, India and Russia held the annual bilateral summit for which Russian President Vladimir Putin flew down specially to New Delhi for a few hours to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The two countries also held their inaugural 2+2 meeting between their foreign and defence ministers, with EAM Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh holding talks with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
The two sides had inked 28 agreements, including in the area of defence, hydrocarbons and for development of the Russian Far East.
