Jairam Ramesh raises ecological concerns over proposed Great Nicobar Airport

New Delhi, Jun 12 (UNI) Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to reconsider the rejection of a full expansion of the runway at INS Baaz, arguing that the move would cause significantly less ecological damage than the proposed greenfield airport under the ambitious Great Nicobar Island Project.
In a letter to the Defence Minister, Ramesh referred to his earlier communication dated May 16, 2026, in which he had suggested expanding the existing runway at INS Baaz in Campbell Bay as an alternative to constructing a new airport in the Gandhi Nagar-Shastri Nagar area of Great Nicobar Island.
The Congress leader also shared details of the correspondence in a post on the social media platform X, stating that he was responding to media reports published on June 8 and attributed to unnamed Defence Ministry sources. According to Ramesh, the sources had argued that extending the INS Baaz runway beyond 4,500 feet would have adverse ecological consequences.
