J&K: 50 shops including restaurants gutted in Sonamarg blaze

Srinagar, Feb 8 (UNI)In a massive fire incident more than 50 shops including restaurants were gutted in the tourist destination of Sonamarg in Jammu Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Saturday, officials said.
However, no one was injured in the incident, they said.
The Fire and Emergency officials said that fire broke out at 6. 20 PM this evening in a double story shopping complex consisting of restaurants, hotel rooms and other utilities in the picturesque Sonamarg market and engulfed the entire building like wildfire.
Soon after the incident several fire fighting engines were rushed from the nearby fire stations including from the district headquarters to control the leaping flames.
They said the upper storey of about 25 shops of different kinds were completely damaged while another 25 shops including restaurants in the ground floor also suffered severe damage.
The fire was brought under control after several hours of hectic operation carried out by the firefighters, they said.
A firefighting official on the duty said that the people of the area attacked fire fighting engines and smashed glass panes that disrupted the operation.
The cause of the fire is being ascertained, they said.
