Mumbai, May 27 (UNI) Chennai Super Kings on Sunday won the final match by eight wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 11th season of the IPL tournament at the Wankhede Stadium here.
Shane Watson (unbeaten 117) helped CSK to grab the title by defeating Hyderabad. Two times champion Chennai made a glorious return after two-year of suspension, and became the IPL champion for the third time.
Chennai successfully chased the target of 178 runs and scored 181 for two wickets in 18.3 overs. Chennai's captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has proved his fortune for the seventh time. With this win, Dhoni equals Rohit Sharma of Mumbai Indians three times to win the title.
Watson made his second century in IPL 11 and hit 11 fours and eight sixes in just 57 balls and made 117 runs. He became the first batsman to score a hundred in the IPL history and named Man of the Match for this match-winning innings.
Chennai had earlier won the title in 2010 and 2011. It won prize money of Rs 20 crore from this win, while Hyderabad missed the title in the second final, worth Rs 12.50 crore. The semi-finalist teams bagged Rs 8.75-8.75 crore.
While chasing the target, Chennai started slow and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's first over was maiden. Later, Faf du Plessis was sent to pavilion on a score of 10 runs in 11 balls. Chennai's first wicket fell on 16 runs, and at the end of the five overs it could score only 20 runs. But Shane Watson started thrashing Hyderbad bowlers in the sixth over and hit a six on Sandeep Sharma's ball and scored 15 runs.
In the seventh over on Siddharth Kaul's spell, Watson and Suresh Raina took 16 runs with two fours and took Chennai on a score of 51 runs. Hyderabad captain Ken Williamson brought his leg-spinner Rashid Khan on the attack in the eighth over, but Watson and Raina managed to play Rashid's over and made six runs.
Earlier, in the first inning, Chennai Super Kings bowlers restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to 178/6. It was Yusuf Pathan who remained unbeaten at 45 and skipper Williamson 47 who saved SRH from a low total and took their team towards a fighting total of 178/6.
Pathan blasted 45 off 25 hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes, while Williamson scored 47 off 36 with 5 fours and two sixes.
SRH opening pair Shikhar Dhawan and Shreevats Goswami started on a cautious note adding 6 runs in the very first over after a good spell by Chahar.
For the first wicket partnership Dhawan 7 (7) and Goswami 5 (5) added only 13 runs.
However, it was good bowling by Lungi Ngidi giving a breakthrough in the second over by claiming wicket of opener Shreevats Goswami trying take second run after being run out at 5 off 5 balls.
It was Ngidi who, with his good line and length, took Willaimson to surprise by bowling a maiden over in the 4th over.
After Goswami skipper Williamson came in and with Dhawan putting a 51 run partnership between them for their 2nd wicket stand.
Both Dhawan and Willaimson charged all CSK bowlers for fours and sixes, except for Ngidi and Chahar who were quite impressive with their bowling attack.
Kane Williamson became only the fifth player to make 700 runs in an IPL season after Joins David Warner, Chris Gayle, Michael Hussey and Virat Kohli.
However, Ravindra Jadeja who bowled flat and straight to Dhawan grabbed wicket of Shikhar Dhawan in the 9th over while trying to slog sweep over the midwicket but failed to make contact.
Dhawan 26 off 25 balls hits two fours and a six.
After Dhawan's departure it was skipper Williamson who was dismissed by legspinner karn Sharma in the 13th over.
Williamson 47 came off in 36 balls hitting 5 fours 2 sixes.
Shakib Al Hasan who was scoring well also throwed his wicket to Bravo in the 16th over after
being caught off by Raina at cover.
Shakib's 23 off 15 balls hit 2 fours and a six.
After Shakib Hooda too was sent to the pavillion by Ngidi while trying to play a shot too early taken by Shorey at deep square leg. Hooda scored 3 off 4.
In the last over of the last ball Thakur bagged wicket of Brathwaite after being caught by Rayudu.
Brathwaite too contributed 21 off 11 balls hitting 3 sixes.
For CSK Ngidi, Karn Sharma, Bravo, Jadeja and Thakur claimed one wickets each.
While though Chahar could not take wicket but was quite impressive with economy 6.25 while Ngidi was also good at 6.50
