Innovative ideas for tackling natural disasters present at KSUM's hackathon

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 8 (UNI) A two-day hackathon, which was organised to find out solutions for mitigating the hardships caused by natural disasters, concluded here on Saturday with as many as 12 teams presenting riveting ideas and solutions that could improve preparedness for relief operations.
The hackathon, "Call for Code Kerala Challenge," was held in Greenfield Stadium at Karyavattom here.
Thrissur-based Studio Bofa, Communicaball from TCS, Technopark in the city and Kasaragod-based Fynext Innovations emerged winners in the programme, organised by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) in partnership with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) and International Business Machines Corporation (IBM).
Studio Bofa presented a conversational platform, ‘Mritasanjivani’, for collaborative disaster management.
Fynext Innovations presented an SOS button named 'Fyne Button' that can be fixed in houses and the residents can contact authorities in the event of a disaster. The artificial intelligence (AI) cloud-based system does not require any network and the battery will last upto 10 years.
Communicaball presented a solution that makes communication possible when all networks are down.
All the 12 teams can participate in the inaugural "Call for Code Global Prize Event and Concert," which is scheduled to be held on October 29 at the Regency Ballroom, San Francisco. The winning team will receive a cash award of US$ 200,000.
The winners were conferred with mementos as a token of appreciation.
The event, significant in the backdrop of the floods that ravaged vast swathes of Kerala, was aimed at building solutions that would greatly improve the preparedness for natural disasters and relief operations.
Leading technical experts from IBM supported software developers in building design and solutions to help solve problems on the ground.
The event was conducted in line with the maiden "Call for Code Global Challenge" to encourage software developers who want to take their skills forward for the specific mission of easing human sufferings.
The global initiative has the support from experts, humanitarian and international organisations, including the United Nations Human Rights Office and the American Red Cross’ international team.
UN Human Rights Office, Red Cross, Linux Foundation and David Clark Cause are behind this initiative that unites software developers to solve pressing social issues. IBM is the founding member of the initiative, which is the largest and most ambitious effort to bring startups, academics and enterprise developers together to solve, prevent, respond and recover from natural disasters.
