Indians received 2x times more scam calls in 2018



New Delhi, Dec 18 (UNI) People in the country received two times more scam calls in the year 2018, increasing from from 3 per cent to 7 per cent mark.

India has moved to the second position in terms of number of scam calls received by users. Brazil topped the list.

Truecaller on Tuesday released its annual 'Truecaller Insight Special Report' that listed the top 20 scam-plagued countries in 2018.

In terms of scam calls, the report divulged that 6.1 per cent of overall calls received by Indian users in 2018 were scam calls. However, the average scam calls received per user in India has dropped to 22.3 calls per user in a month which is 1.5 per cent less than previous compared to last year.

With regard to scam call categorisation, operators and telecom service providers continue to be the top scammers in India with 91 per cent user calls received for the upselling of various offers and balance reminders. This is followed by scam callers and telemarketers who garnered 7 per cent and 2 per cent respectively.

Out of this, Truecaller has been successful in identifying and blocking 20.2 billion calls.

It has also identified and blocked 17.7 billion scam calls globally, where every fourth call that users received was a scam call.

Brazil has taken over India as the most scammed country in the world with an 81 per cent increase from the previous year.
