Indian film ‘Sir’ wins Critic’s Week prize in Cannes

Cannes, May 19 (UNI) ‘Sir’, the first feature film of Pune-born director Rohena Gera, has bagged one of the top honours in the Critic’s Week parallel section of the Cannes film festival.

‘Sir’, the story of a domestic help’s relationship with her master, won the Gan Foundation Award at the Critic’s Week Awards on Friday night.

The Gan Foundation Award support s a film's distribution. Presented by the Gan Foundation, one of the principal private partners in French cinema, the award supports creators rights for distribution of their works.

‘Sir’ was the only Indian entry in the Critic’s Week, which had earlier

premiered Indian films such as ‘The Lunchbox’.

“It is a film about domestic helps who are not visible in our society,” said Gera, who lives in France. The film stars Tillotama Shome and Vivek Gomber.

‘Sir’ was the only non-European film in the feature competition section of the Critic’s Week, which had eight films.

The top prize, the Nespresso Grand Prize, went to Brazilian film ‘Diamantino’ by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt.

Norwegian director Joachim Trier headed the Critic’s Week jury this year.

‘Woman at War’ by Icelandic director Benedikt Erlingsson picked up the SACD prize for screenplay.

The Palme d’Or, the top prize of the Cannes film festival, will be announced at the closing ceremony of the festival on Saturday night.
