Indian Chamber of Commerce organises a session on self-sufficiency in edible oils sector

Kolkata, Oct 20 (UNI) "Improving the investment climate for Edible Oil sector is on top priority for Government,” said Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, Government of India during an e-Conference titled 'Make in India: Towards self-sufficiency in edible oils sector' organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) recently.
Pandey further added that to encourage domestic production of edible oils, the government has taken up the national mission for edible oils, and give full focus on non-traditional sources like rice bran, cottonseed and tree borne oilseeds.
He also informed that although the import supply chain will play an important role, gradual increase in the domestic production of edible oil is the need of the hour though.
He also informed that the Industry has an important role to play – making right offer to farmers with a longer horizon and the need to become competitive in doing so .
He said Industry, State Governments, local NGOs and all other stakeholders have to work together in this mission.

Shubha Thakur Joint Secretary (Crops & Oil Seeds), Department of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Government of India talked about the importance of reducing the production cost of edible oil, adopting the integrated farming system and developing the value-added products for doubling the farmers’ income. She informed that out of 10,000 FPOs in India 100 FPOs are only focusing on the oilseed sector. The government has identified 11 states and 365 districts to promote oilseed production and processing.

Talking about import, Sudhakar Desai CEO, Emami Agrotech Ltd & President, Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) informed that currently India brings in around 65 percent edible oil from outside and this percentage can be reduced to about 40-45 percent with a clear medium term strategy on oil and statewise plan of action.

Dr. Rajeev Singh Director General, Indian Chamber of Commerce while delivering his welcome address stated that the edible oil supply chain has huge potential to be self-sufficient.
The COVID 19 period that succumbed to an import challenge has already proved that India can very well be self-sufficient be it in production or processing of edible oil, with the necessary steps in place.

The e-conference also witnessed strong private sector participation where eminent dignitaries such as G. Chandrashekhar Senior Editor and Policy Commentator Independent Member, SEBI - CDAC and SEBI – RAC, Amrendra Mishra Managing Director (Oilseeds) & Country Manager India, ADM Agro Industries India Pvt. Ltd., and Dr. Davish Jain President & Chairman, PRESTIGE Group of Industries & Educational Institutions; Chairman, Soybean Processors' Association of India (SOPA).
The panel recommended among various things, implementation of “Bhavantar” scheme to protect the oilseed farmers, cash incentives to farmers for the acreage shifts from grains to oilseeds and for yield improvements , and also take measures to stop import of soya refined oils at Zero duty , from SAFTA countries etc.
