Indian bowlers restrict New Zealand to 260/7

Ranchi, Oct 26 (UNI) Disciplined bowling by the Indian bowlers who came back strongly after the first 10 overs helped India restrict New Zealand to 260/7 after visiting captain Kane Williamson won the first toss during his team’s tour of the sub-continent in the Fourth ODI being played at the JSCA International Cricket Stadium here. For the Kiwis, opener Martin Guptill was the top scorer with 72 runs. Kane Williamson made a well constructed 41. For India Amit Mishra once again was among the wicket takers as he finished his spell of 10 overs with the figures of 2 for 41. Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, Dhawal Kulkarni and Umesh Yadav accounted for a wicket each. Opting to bat first the opening pair of Tom Latham and Martin Guptill commenced their innings on a brisk note particularly Guptill who scored 16 runs in the second over of the day bowled by Dhawal Kulkarni which included three boundaries. Earlier Umesh Yadav had commenced proceedings for the day with a maiden over. Tom Latham too had a liking for Kulkarni’s bowling has he belted couple of fours driving through the cover during the second over of his spell. 50 came up for the visitors in the eight over of the match. However in the seventh over of the match Amit Mishra dropped a difficult one from Guptill at mid-on in the bowling of Yadav. As the opening bowling pair of Yadav and Kulkarni failed to make any inroads, Dhoni brought Pandya as the first change in the tenth over. However he struggled to find his line and length and conceded 12 runs which included three consecutive wide balls and a boundary each by Latham and Guptill. At the end of first 10 overs of the mandatory power-play the Kiwis raced away to 80 without any loss scoring at the rate of 8 runs per over. Dhoni introduced spin from both ends after the end of the power play and the spin duo of Amit Mishra and Axar Patel applied brake on the scoring rate and finally Patel managed to break the opening pair as he had Latham caught while trying to sweep at short fine leg at 39 which included four boundaries. The duo had put 96 runs for the first wicket stand. Guptill reached his 50 (50 balls) in the 17th over. Hundred was up for the visitors in the 18th over of the match as captain Kane Williamson joined Guptill at the crease. The duo steadied the ship and once again Amit Mishra gave Guptill a lifeline as the ball went between his hands during the 23rd over bowled by Kedar Jadhav. Guptill at that time was batting on 62. Hardik Pandya who was called for his second spell struck in the 26th over as he had the danger man Guptill caught behind by Dhoni with the scoreboard reading 138/2. Guptill scored 72 of 84 balls which included 12 boundaries. The visitors who had scored 80 in the first 10 overs could manage to add another 81 runs in the next 20 overs with the scoreboard reaching 161/2 mainly on account of spinners drying up the runs and some fine piece of fielding. Williamson and under-fire Ross Taylor who walked in after the fall of Guptill’s wicket consolidated the innings and put on a partnership of 46 runs before Amit Mishra had the New Zealand captain caught behind by Dhoni in the 36th over. Williamson who was looking set to bat till the end was out on 41 which he scored in 59 balls and hit four boundaries. Only eight runs were added to the score as Mishra struck again in the 38th over as he had James Neesham caught by Kohli at cover. Neesham could just manage to score 6 runs. 200 came up for New Zealand in the 41st over of their innings. Trying to up the run rate BJ Watling who had joined after fall of Neesham’s wicket perished in the 44th over bowled by Dhawal Kulkarni as he was caught at fine leg by Rohit Sharma. He managed to score 14 runs. Ross Taylor failed to shrug off his wretched form during the tour of India and scored a mere 35 after consuming 58 balls. He was run out by Dhoni's brilliant throw in the 46th over. Wickets continued to tumble as the visitors failed to up the ante. 250 was up for the Kiwis at the end of the 49th over and finally their innings ended on 260 as Tim Southee hit the last ball of the innings to a boundary. India had made one change into their playing 11 with pacer Jasprit Bumrah being replaced by Dhawal Kulkarni. While the visitors made three changes into their playing 11 with BJ Watling replacing wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi, while Anton Devcich and Ish Sodhi also form part of the playing 11. UNI AK RSD BD1722
