India yet again records over 60k Covid cases, tally jumps past 23 lakh

New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) For the second consecutive day on Wednesday, India witnessed a record daily hike with 60,963 fresh cases, spiralling the Covid-19 case load to 23,29,639.
On Tuesday, the country saw a drastic drop of 8463 cases, recording 53,601 cases of COVID-19.
The new cases include dignitaries like Union Minister of State for Defence and Minister for AYUSH Shripad Naik, West Bengal minister for MSME Swapan Debnath, Congress party's Mahagama MLA Deepika Pandey Singh and BJP National Vice President and former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Raman Singh’s wife. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb remained in isolation for past one week after two of his family members and five security personnel tested Covid-19 positive.
The global pandemic has also claimed at least 834 lives in the past 24 hrs which includes a police constable as well as the former Puducherry Local Administration Minister A Elumalai.
Altogether, 6,43,948 cases were active pan India.
The country also recorded the highest daily recoveries of 56,110 were registered, taking the total number of cured and discharged to 16,39,599. The recovery rate rose to 70.38 per cent, as per the Union Health Ministry update.
The country conducted a total number of 7,33,449 tests during the previous day, which takes the cumulative total of tests till August 11 to 2,60,15,297.
The worst-hit Maharashtra has 1,48,860 active cases while five testing labs were banned Nashik Municipal Corporation for allegedly overlooking norms which resulted in more number of persons contracting the COVID-19.
Andhra Pradesh which registered 9,597 fresh cases taking the number of active cases to 87,597. The overall tally of the state stood at 2,54,146 while 93 patients died taking the death toll to 2,296.
Karnataka has 79,614 active cases taking the number of infected in the state to 1,88,611.
Tamil Nadu, which is the second most hit state in the country with 3,08,649 cases till date was recovering fast as it recorded 52,810 active cases on Wednesday.
However, Uttar Pradesh, which was under control in the beginning, recorded 4583 taking the active number of cases to 49,347.
The National capital Delhi, with its unique model to combat the virus has only 10,868 active cases while eight people succumbed in the past 24 hrs.
Russia has become the first country in the world to register a COVID-19 vaccine, President Vladimir Putin had claimed on Tuesday.
"As far as I know, for the first time in the world, a vaccine against the novel coronavirus infection was registered this morning," the president said at a meeting with the government.
Among the 24 vaccine candidates currently under various stages of clinical trials, three are at advances stages of phase three trials in the US, UK and China.
Globally, there have been more than 20.28 infections and 741,126 people have succumbed to the viral disease, according to the Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus tracker.
