India will leapfrog to world no 5 in digital connectivity in 5-6 years: IT secretary

New Delhi, Apr 19 (UNI) India is all set to leapfrog from the present 155th position to world's top five in the digital connectivity within the next 5-6 years, Electronics & IT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said here today. Ms Sundararajan was talking to the mediapersons after launching the report of ‘Index of Internet Readiness of Indian States’, published by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Nielsen. “The digital footprint of our country is growing and India is one of the most rapidly digitising economies in the world with the telecom industry leading the change”, She said. As a recognition for the country’s steps in the Cyber world, India will be the host of the fifth edition of the Global Conference on Cyber Space (GCCS) in October this year, Ms Sundararajan said. This Government is more active in ‘social media’, IT secretary quipped while adding, "Post demonetisation, the country has 3-million POS (Point of Sale) as compared to 1.5 lakhs POS earlier which is clearly a transformation and going forward to the infrastructure for digital payments will grow triple folded within a span of one year.” While talking about the Aadhaar scheme she said ,"500 crore transactions done with Aadhar cards in 2 years." She further said, the combination of various indigenous digital platforms along with innovative and disruptive startups holds the greatest scope for digital transformation in India. “Things have improved multifold with the State Governments of Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana among others taking proactive steps to improve connectivity and internet reach," Ms Sundararajan said.
