India, US pledge to achieve mutually 'beneficial outcomes' in trade parleys

New Delhi, Jul 12 (UNI) Days after the US President Donald Trump said that higher tariff rates by the Modi government were 'not acceptable', both sides on Friday pledged to continue discussions for achieving "mutually beneficial outcomes" aimed at further growing the economic relationship and addressing mutual trade concerns.

An official statement said here that the meeting between two sides was cordial and aimed at providing a new impetus to bilateral trade and commercial ties.
The deliberations were in line with the mandate given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US President Donald Trump during their meeting at Osaka, Japan on June 29, 2019, it said.
A delegation led by Assistant United States Trade Representative(AUSTR) Christopher Wilson visited India on July 11 and 12 to "explore potential" for enhanced bilateral trade and economic engagement with India under the new Government in Delhi.
The delegation held 'bilateral talks' on Friday with the Indian delegation led by Sanjay Chadha, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and which also included senior officials from other Ministries.
AUSTR also called on the Commerce Secretary and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal during the visit.
"Met the United States Trade Representative team today to strengthen India-US trade ties. We deliberated on several issues to take our deep, historic and strong trade relationship to the next level," Mr Goyal tweeted.
The visiting delegation led by Christopher Wilson on Thursday formally kicked off parleys with the Indian officials on Thursday.
"Our approach is to engage them very constructively and in a very positive manner," MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar told reporters here on Thursday.
He also said - "we have to keep in mind the bigger picture and within that big picture we have to deal with all issues".
The negotiations between India and the US are taking place especially after President Trump had
tweeted: "India has long had a field day putting Tariffs on American products. No longer acceptable".
