India to give Rs 35-cr to Bangladesh under 'Muktijodha scholarship' scheme

Dhaka/New Delhi, Apr 30 (UNI) India will give Rs 35-crore scholarship to children of the Freedom Fighters in Bangladesh during the next five years under the new 'Muktijodha scholarship' scheme. Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, announced this in Dhaka yesterday students at higher secondary level will get an one time grant of Rs 15,370 rupees and those at Under-Graduate level will get Rs 38,430. A fresh batch 10,000 Bangladeshi students will receive scholarships worth total Rs 35-crore or over 45.5-crore Taka (Bangaldeshi currency) to be awarded under the new Muktijodha scholarship scheme. “The initiatives announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflect our continued solidarity with the valiant Muktijodhas,” said the High Commissioner while addressing a scholarship award-giving ceremony at the Theatre Institute, Dhaka yesterday. India initiated the Muktijodha Scholarship Scheme in 2006 for descendants of the 1971 Freedom Fighters. During Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Delhi visit, three new welfare schemes for Bangladeshi freedom fighters were announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month. As per the welfare, all Freedom Fighters are now eligible for five years multiple entry Indian visa, while 100 Freedom Fighters will be provided free medical treatment in Indian hospitals every year as per the welfare schemes. “You’ve fought shoulder to shoulder with Indian troops in 1971 and continue to be our eternal friends,” said the Indian envoy at the function. He also thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for honouring the Indian martyrs of War of Liberation during her recent visit to India. UNI XC DEVN SNU 1601
