India’s rice output may hit record 152 MT in 2025-26: USDA

New Delhi, Dec 15 (UNI) India is moving towards historic milestones in food grain production, with rice production expected to reach an unprecedented 152 million tonnes during the year 2025-26 crop/marketing season, said the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its data released on Monday.
This success is attributed primarily to the favourable southwest monsoon, a large area being planted, and good in-season growing conditions, as verified by satellite imagery.
USDA noted that because of rice’s high yield potential and lower climate risk, more farmers are choosing to produce it, which will continue to drive production.
Moreover, wheat production is also anticipated to go up to 117.9 million tonnes, driven by a substantial increase in sowings to 24.14 million hectares from the previous year's 21.78 million hectares.
To sustain the growth trajectory, the government will continue to advance agricultural productivity through strategic inventions and policies, the
The National Mission on Edible Oils-Oilseeds focuses on enhancing the long-term viability of edible oils by helping farmers adopt better crop varieties and modern farming methods.
The report noted that the introduction of 432 new high-yielding varieties and hybrids across nine key edible oilseed crops, along with the creation of a network of over 600 value chains, represents the Indian government’s full commitment to modernising this sector.
Together with intense monsoon periods, the expansion of cultivated areas and scientific advances in crop production will contribute to India’s expanding agricultural output. UNI SAS SSP
