India raises basic customs duty to 200 pc on goods exported from Pakistan

New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) India increased basic custom duty to 200 per cent on all goods exported from Pakistan, the Government announced on Saturday, a day after the status of Most Favoured Nation was withdrawn from Islamabad.

The custom duty was raised on all goods with immediate effect, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted.

"India has withdrawn MFN status to Pakistan after the Pulwama incident. Upon withdrawal, basic customs duty on all goods exported from Pakistan to India has been raised to 200 per cent with immediate effect."

The Government on Friday had withdrawn the status of 'MFN' given to Pakistan in 1996 in protest of the February 14 Pulwama attack on a CRPF convoy.

The MFN status is given to a trade partner to ensure non-discriminatory trade between two countries. Though India had granted the status to Pakistan, the neighbouring country had never reciprocated despite it being required to do so as a member of the World Trade Organisation.

On Thursday, an explosive laden vehicle was rammed in to a CRPF convoy of 78 vehicles carrying more than 2,500 Central Reserve Police Force jawans from Jammu to Srinagar, killing 40 jawans and several injured.
