India or Bharat? SC puts ball in Centre's court

New Delhi, Jun 3 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to interfere with a petition, seeking to change the country's name from India and Hindustan to 'Bharat' exclusively, while directing the Central government to treat the writ petition as a representation and take a decision on the same.

'You go and approach the concerned Ministries for relief. We don't want to pass any order on your petition,' the three-judge Bench, headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, said in its order.

Petitioner Namah had moved the apex court, seeking a direction that there should be one name for the country.

He said, 'India is a name of foreign origin. The name can be traced back to the Greek term 'Indica'. The word 'Bharat' is closely associated to our Freedom struggle. The cry was 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'.

'There should be one name. Many names are here for India. The apex court should pass appropriate orders or directions with this regard,' the petition stated.

The court said the petition be transformed into a representation and forwarded to the ministries, primarily the Ministry of Home Affairs.
