India does not recognise 'watch list' move by US, says H1B visa is about illegal migration

India does not recognise 'watch list' move by US, says H1B visa is about illegal migration

New Delhi, Mar 20 (UNI) The government is "continuously engaging" with the United States administration on various facets of bilateral trade between the two countries, the Lok Sabha was informed today even as Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the H1B visa related matter is essentially linked to "illegal migration". However, the Minister insisted that "India does not recognise" any decision of the US administration to put India under any "watch list". "India does not recognise the United State’s authority to put India under any kind of watch-list because no unilateral monitoring or policing of another country’s policies is acceptable to India," she said during Question Hour. "The US Administration has very clearly said they shall be dealing with illegal immigration and the H1B visa related matter will be nuanced, but the priority at the moment seems to deal with the illegal immigration," Ms Sitharaman said. She added, "the fear that all of us were seeing through the media here about the H1B visa has, at least for the year 2018, not proven correct". Answering to supplementary questions, the Minister said there has been a "continuous engagement" with the new administration in the US to voice the concern of Indian industry, particularly of the IT sector, and also the others who have invested". "I am glad to say that as regards the H1B visa for the year 2018, the US Government has already notified their position and there is not any significant change from the existing regime," she said. The Minister said government has been raising matters concerning the interests of Indian business houses who have invested in that country. Ms Sitharaman said the issue was also taken up by with the visiting Congressional delegation led by Bob Goodlatte, and during the visit of commerce secretary Rita Teotia and foreign secretary S Jaishankar to the US. To another query, she said it is true the US monitors policies of 73 countries and India may be one of them. "But we don't recognise any monitoring by any countries. No unilateral policing is acceptable for India," she said. UNI DEVN AE 1930
