India differs with US on COP 21 agreement

New Delhi, Jun 8 (UNI) The External Affairs Ministry today clarified that India did not agree to join the Paris COP 21 agreement in 2016, as the US side said in its briefing on the Obama-Modi meeting. "A small clarification. The US side in its briefing on the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama has said that India agreed to join the COP 21. That is not correct," sources in the Ministry said. "We agreed to join as soon as possible and that is what is reflected in the Joint Statement as well," said the sources. In the Joint Statement issued after the talks, it was stated that the US and India share common climate and clean energy interests and are close partners in the fight against climate change. "Both countries are committed to working together and with others to promote full implementation of the Paris Agreement to address the urgent threats posed by climate change. India and the United States recognise the urgency of climate change and share the goal of enabling entry into force of the Paris Agreement as early as possible," the statement said. It said that the US reaffirms its commitment to join the Agreement as soon as possible this year. India similarly has begun its processes to work toward this shared objective. UNI MK PR RP1523
