Shortly after arriving, Kovind paid tribute to late former Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, where his ashes were buried.
"Honoured to begin my state visit to Cuba by paying homage to Fidel Castro in Santiago de Cuba. A great friend of India, who lent dignity and strength to the voice of developing countries in the international arena. His leadership shall continue to inspire millions," the president said in a tweet.
Kovind will visit the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, pay tribute to National Hero, Jose Marti, offer a keynote speech at the Main Lecture hall of the Havana University and tour the historical district of the Cuban capital.
