India achieves renewable energy target 5 yrs ahead of schedule, ranks third globally: Jain

Bengaluru, Aug 13 (UNI) India has achieved its nationally determined contribution (NDC) target of 50 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources five years ahead of schedule, ranking third globally in renewable energy capacity, said Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary, Energy Department, Government of India, during a seminar on renewable energy transition for commercial and industrial consumers in the southern region today.
“This is not just a statistic. It translates into cleaner air in our cities, reliable electricity for farmers, and thousands of new green jobs,” Jain emphasized, highlighting the real-world impact of India’s renewable energy progress.
The southern region, particularly Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, has played a leading role in this achievement. Together, the two states contribute nearly 20 gigawatts of renewable capacity, while the region as a whole hosts over 30 gigawatts of solar energy. “For a region that already contributes heavily to India’s energy sector output, these numbers are transformative,” he said.
Jain underscored the crucial role of commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers, who account for nearly half of India’s electricity consumption. “Your decisions on procurement, efficiency, and innovation directly shape the grid of tomorrow,” he said. Across India, C&I consumers have deployed 35–40 gigawatts of renewable capacity as of last year, demonstrating their role as catalysts for the energy transition.
Looking ahead, Jain urged industry participants to expand domestic manufacturing beyond solar modules to include batteries, inverters, electrolyzers, and wind components. “We need to master the full ecosystem, not just parts of it,” he said, stressing the importance of self-reliance in energy technology.
Digitalization was highlighted as a key enabler of the future smart grid. “The grid isn’t just electronics; it’s data. Your analytics and platforms can make that smart grid happen,” he said.
Jain also called for a mass movement in rooftop solar, noting that even modest yearly additions could bring solar to one crore households. He urged participants to leverage apps and logistics innovations to scale this sector efficiently.
Highlighting emerging opportunities, Jain spoke of green ammonia and hydrogen. “India has locked in bids as low as 52 rupees per kg for green ammonia. Now is the time to scale this ecosystem, especially with green hydrogen electrolysis,” he said, citing India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission as one of the world’s largest.
He further pointed to offshore wind as an untapped opportunity, urging the southern region to become a national benchmark in policy stability, investment attractiveness, and C\\\\\\\\&I-led decarbonization.
“Energy is aspiration into time. Delay and you install aspirations of students studying under lamps, of factories pausing production, of cities choking on smog. Act fast,” Jain warned, urging swift action to align economics, ecology, and ethics in one meaningful equation.
Reflecting on India’s renewable energy journey, he recalled initial targets of 165–175 gigawatts by 2022, the revised goal of 500 gigawatts by 2030, and the early achievement of NDC targets in 2025. “The world is no longer just watching India—they are trying to catch up. So let’s not wait for the future to arrive. Let’s make it together,” he concluded.
