Kolkata, Dec 14 (UNI) Incidents of sporadic violence against Citizenship Act continued unabated in Bengal as in protestors in rural Howrah, Murshidabad, Birbhum, parts of Burdwan and North Bengal hit the streets on Saturday and raised slogans against the Centre.
Incidents of violence were reported from Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas districts, and also from rural Howrah as road and rail blockades continued in different parts of the state.
The National Highway 34, one of the arterial roads connecting North and South Bengal, was blocked in Murshidabad.
Several other roads in the district were also blocked.
In Howrah's Domjur area, the National Highway 6 was blocked as agitators torched tyres and ransacked several vehicles, police said.
Yesterday too, Beldanga railway station complex in Murshidabad was set on fire and RPF personnel deputed there were thrashed.
Amid protests, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the Centre, saying she would not
allow its implementation in the state "under any circumstances".
Ms Banerjee said, "The saffron party cannot bulldoze the states to implement the law."
She slammed the ruling party at the Centre for "adopting divisive policies" saying her TMC government would not allow the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and NRC in the state and called
for mass agitation from Monday on wards.
"We will not allow the CAB and NRC to be implemented in Bangla," and announced a series of protest programmes against CAB.
" It is the state government which implements a law. By passing Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament and turning it into law, the Centre can’t force us to abide by it," Ms Banerjee elaborated.
"Do not play with the sentiments of the states. Assam is burning. People should protest. We are not scared of going to jail. Hon’ble Prime Minister of Japan is thinking of cancelling his visit to
India. It is a matter of shame for the country. We respect Sheikh Hasina Ji. She is not communal. But even they are now afraid of coming to India," Ms Banerjee said in coastal town Digha during Bengal Business Conclave.
She said her party will organise protests against CAB using Constitutional means.
"We have always supported the helpless and the poor. BJP is like a washing machine. If a person joins BJP all their crimes are washed away. We congratulate all the parties who are with us in this battle," she said.
"I will not take any communal path. All are welcome to join us in the protests," she added.
She said the Trinamool has a consistent stand against CAB and NRC.
"We will never allow NRC and CAB to be implemented in Bangla. Instead of providing basic necessities to people – roti, kapda, makaan– they were trying to divide the nation on religious lines.
They are using their brute majority. This is not right. We support our brothers and sisters in the north-eastern States. We will organise peaceful protests," she maintained.
Continuing her tirade, the chief minister said, "The authorities are asking for 70-year-old documents from the people. They should first ask Biplab Deb to show his documents. India has had so many prime ministers. No one divided the country."
