In major breakthrough for Govt, northeastern regional parties back Citizenship Bill

New Delhi, Dec 9 (UNI) In a major breakthrough for the government in general and Union Home Ministry in particular, two key northeastern parties MNF in Mizoram and lone NPF member in Manipur on Monday backed the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Former Union Minister Agatha Sanmga of NPP also supported the Bill.
C Lalrosanga of MNF and NPF Dr Lorho S Pfoze said they have faith in the assurance from the Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the interest of the northeastern states and the concerns of the tribals have been "protected".
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal urged the NDA dispensation to include sects from the Muslim community, who are facing persecution in neighbouring countries, in the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Participating in the debate on the bill, he said the government should include "Ahmediyas and Hazaras" in the ambit of the bill.
According to the proposed legislation, members of the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities, who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014 and were facing religious persecution in those countries.
