Illegal trading of psychotropic cough syrup: Medical agency owner among 5 arrested

Raipur, Jan 24 (UNI) Busting a major racket involved in psychotropic drug trade, Police in Chhattisgarh capital have arrested five persons including an owner of a medical agency in this connection and recovered 1800 bottles of psychotropic cough syrup worth Rs 2.50 lakh from their possession.
ASP (City) Prafull Thakur said on Friday that a tip off was received late Thursday night about a Maruti Ertiga vehicle moving towards Telghaninaka Chowk and illegally carrying huge consignment of psychotropic cough syrup.
Acting on this tip off, police immediately barricaded the way and intercepted the said vehicle bearing registration number CG11-AM-7131.
During search of the vehicle 720 bottles (100ml each) of cough syrup were found in it. Two persons namely Nitesh Virani and Manoj Namdev who were travelling in this vehicle could not provide any bill or relevant documents in support of transportation of cough syrup bottles.
Both of them were then taken into custody and brought to police station along with the vehicle. During interrogation, Nitesh told police that he runs a polythene business in Janjgir-Champa.
He informed that he purchased the seized cough syrup from one Anil Kamnani of Bhatapara, who runs a medical agency in the name of M/s Prem Prakash Medical Agency near Telghaninaka Chowk.
Following this revelation a police team was sent to Bhatapara to take Kamnani into custody and bring him to Raipur.
Confessing his involvement in illegal drug trade Kamnani told police that he had procured the cough syrup through Dhiraj Madhvani, the area salesman of a pharmaceutical company and an employee of Doomartarai based M/s Ashoka Sales.
After this revelation Madhvani was detained. He told police that he used to procure these cough syrup bottles from M/s Emmar Company in UP before supplying them to Amit Gurubakshani, the proprietor of M/s. Ashoka Sales at Doomartarai.
On the basis of this information police conducted raid at the premises of M/s. Ashoka Sales and seized huge stock of illegally procured cough syrup from its warehouse.
With this recovery, owner of the firm Gurubakshani was also taken into custody. Police booked all five under Section 21B of NDPS Act and started further investigation into the matter.
