IIT Ropar organises 15th edition of IEEE International conference, ICIIS 2020

Ropar, Nov 30 (UNI) This week IIT Ropar saw a massive online gathering of internationally renowned experts and delegates from more than eight countries including Sri Lanka, USA, Italy, Denmark, Australia, Germany, Sweden and Japan for the 15th (IEEE) International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS) 2020, which was conducted in a virtual mode, for the first time in the last fifteen years of the history of the conference, during 26th – 28th November 2020.
The conference is held alternately in India and Srilanka and several first generation IITs already hosted it, while it is for the first time held in a new generation IIT. During the inaugural talk, Professor Sarit Kumar Das, Director, IIT Ropar emphasised on the role of IEEE in Electrical Engineering as world's best professional body, which actively engages in professional activities on a non-profit basis and ensures quality in conferences. He said publishing in some of the conferences became even more tougher than the transactions.
Dr. C C Reddy, the conference chair said it is the third IEEE conference being held in the Electrical Department of IIT Ropar, and is the oldest among them in popularity.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by patrons of the institute, Prof. Sarit Kumar Das, Director, IIT Ropar and Prof. Javed Agrewala, Dean Research, IIT Ropar, head of the departments, the general chair, the TPC chair, co-chairs, respective session chairs and invited dignitaries. A plenary session on “Sensor Platforms for Affordable IoT Solutions in the Developing World” was delivered by Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi. The conference was financially co-sponsored by IEEE Delhi Section and technically co-sponsored by IEEE Sri Lanka Section, IEEE Kharagpur Section, IEEE India Council.
This conference was organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Ropar, with an aim to provide the most effective forum to disseminate knowledge and share expertise among researchers, scientists and engineers in the academia and the industry in a wide spectrum of sub disciplines in Power, Energy and High Voltage Engineering, Signal and Image Processing, Computer, Embedded and Intelligent Systems and Data Engineering, Communication and Information Technology, Control, Robotics and Automation, Electronics, Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering.The conference sessions were held on 27th and 28th November 2020, while two workshops on “Advances in Dielectrics, High Voltage Engineering and Power Systems” and "Computer Vision with Deep Learning" were conducted on 26th November, in which eminent professors and dignitaries were invited to deliver talks in the key areas of their respective disciplines. The organizing committee of IEEE ICIIS 2020 comprised Dr. C C Reddy, IIT Ropar, India as the General Chair, Dr. Janaka Wijayaklasooriya, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka as the General co-chair, Dr. Subrahmanyam Murala, IIT Ropar, India as the TPC Chair, Prof. Sudip Misra, IIT Kharagpur, India and Dr. Saifullah Payami, IIT Ropar, India as the TPC Co-Chairs.
A total of 364 papers were submitted, out of which 113 were accepted, keeping in view the high technical standard of the conference. Due to the ongoing pandemic situation, the authors were given an opportunity to present their papers using the live video conferencing facility of Google meet, as well as pre-recorded video paper presentations.
The technical sessions were held in four different tracks namely “Power, Energy and High Voltage Engineering and Controls, Robotics and Automation”, “Signal and Image Processing and Electronics, Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering”, “Computer, Embedded and Intelligent Systems and Data Engineering” and “Communications and Information Technology” in the respective google meet rooms. The technical sessions in the respective tracks were chaired by internationally renowned professors. Professors from Florida State University, USA, University of Bologna, Italy, Aalborg University, Denmark, Tokyo University, Japan, Monash University, Australia, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Gandhi Nagar, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Bhubaneswar actively contributed their research talks at the conference. Each day of the conference witnessed keynote talks and invited lectures from the session chairs, industry experts and senior IEEE dignitaries. The conduction of all the sessions was very smooth and there was no interruption of any sort in either the audio, video or the presentations, making it convenient for one and all.
