IFFI to screen two films for visually impaired

By Ashok Shukla
Panaji, Nov 19 (UNI) The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) beginning here on Monday will show two Hindi movies with the audio described technology for the visually impaired persons.
The two films, 'Secret Superstar' and 'Hindi Medium', would be screened under the Accessible India Campaign and in collaboration with UNESCO and Delhi-based Saksham Trust.
The audio description gives a visually impaired person a true sense of what is happening on the screen. The normal film soundtrack is broadcast to cinema speakers in the usual way, while a recorded narrator explains what's happening on screen - in gaps in the dialogue - through personal headphones.
Secret Superstar would be screened on November 22 and Hindi Medium would be shown the next day.
Saksham co founder Rummi Seth told UNI that Saksham has already audio described 25 movies and documentaries, including some children’s films. Some of the movies also have subtitles for hearing impaired persons.
"Screening of such films is aimed at promoting the creation of inclusive spaces for the differently abled to access the joy of cinema through audio description," Seth said.
She said all movies released in the country should come with audio description so that the differently abled could enjoy films like any other person.
For the first time last year, three audio-described movies -- Gandhi, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Dhanak-- were screened at IFFI-Goa.
IFFI’s decision to screen accessible films is expected to go a long way in helping the Accessible India Campaign in the country.
Accessible India Campaign is a nationwide flagship campaign of the Indian government which aims to facilitate a barrier-free and conducive environment for the differently abled all over the country.
