ICF rolls out Train 18, India's first engine less train for trial run

ICF rolls out Train 18, India's first engine less train for trial run

Chennai, Oct 29 (UNI) Considered as a successor to the hugely successful

Shatabdi Express, India's first indigenously developed high-tech and energy

efficient swanky engineless train--'Train 18'--was rolled out from the premium

rail coach maker Integral Coach Factory (ICF) premises on Monday evening.

At a function got up at the ICF, Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani

flagged off the first prototype in the presence of ICF General Manager S Mani.

The self-propelled fully air-conditioned train, which could touch a speed of 160

kmph, was built at a cost of Rs 100 crore and the test runs would be conducted

in a couple of sectors for two months before it was opened for passengers use.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Lohani said including this (which was rolled out

today), one more (making it two sets) would be rolled out this year.

'Next year we will manufacture another four coaches', he added.

With aero-dynamically designed driver cabins in both ends that would ensure

faster turnaround time, the Train-18, which would have 16 coaches with the

same passenger carrying capacity, would be 15-20 per cent energy efficient

and leaves less carbon footprint.

The entire concept of the engineless train, which offers better comfort for

passengers and safety, including design and development was done in a

record 18 months time.

Mr Mani said the seats were rotatable in the Executive class to match the

train direction. The train would have a total seating capacity of about 1,100

passengers.
