Hyderabad vet rape-murder case: PFI calls for action against regressive norms

Hyderabad, Dec 4 (UNI) Strongly condemning the horrific rape and murder of a veterinarian doctor in this capital town on November 27, which sent shock waves across the country, the Population Foundation of India on Wednesday called for collective action against regressive social norms.
In a statement here, Poonam Muttreja of PFI said ''The Population Foundation of India greatly condemns the horrific rape and murder of 26-year-old veterinarian doctor Disha from Hyderabad. Violence against women is a fundamental violation of women's rights, dignity and agency.
''The discrimination against women in our culture is so deeply ingrained that it is a continuum of a life cycle of violence, and incidents such as these demonstrate that violence continues to be an over-arching narrative of Women's lives.
''It is clearly time to act- it is our collective responsibility to eradicate regressive social norms and societal attitudes around gender,'' she added.
